“The place you are today is not the place you will always be. But it is the place where God is growing something in you.”
There is a quiet temptation, one that visits most of us in the ordinary hours, to believe that life doesn’t truly begin until we reach the next milestone.
When I get the promotion. When I publish the book. When the business finally grows. When the finances even out. When the waiting is over — then, we tell ourselves, life will start.
But Scripture paints a different picture. A slower one. A deeper one.
Throughout the Bible, God does some of His deepest work not on mountaintops, in front of a crowd, but in the hidden seasons no one applauds.
Joseph learned leadership in the dark of a prison cell, long before he stood in Pharaoh’s court.
Moses spent forty years tending sheep in the wilderness before he ever raised his staff over the Red Sea.
David was anointed king as a boy in his father’s field, oil still fresh on his forehead, and yet he would not wear the crown for years.
Even Yeshua lived quietly in Nazareth for decades, sanding wood, sweeping a carpenter’s floor, before His public ministry ever began.
Waiting was never wasted. It became part of the grain of who they would become.
Even creation bears witness to this truth.
What Grows Unseen
Beneath the soil, before the green shoot ever breaks the light, there is work no one applauds.
A seed sends down one root first. The radicle. Small. Determined. Blind to the dark around it.
From that single thread, a whole system branches outward — wider, sometimes, than the plant will ever stand.
It takes a season. Sometimes two. Most of the plant’s strength spent on what will never be photographed, never be praised, never once be seen.
Some roots find help down there — threads of fungus, quiet partnerships, reaching further than the plant could reach alone.
None of it visible. All of it necessary.
This is what lets a plant stand in the wind. This is what lets it drink when the surface has long since gone dry.
Our growth is not so different.
Under stress, under waiting, under the weight of not-yet — the body does not stop. It redirects.
Somewhere behind the eyes, pathways are rewiring, pruning what we no longer need, strengthening what we use.
The waiting season is not barren. It is wiring work. Patience, taking shape in silence. Discernment, forming where no one can watch it form.
We call it character once it finally shows up — in how we respond, in what we don’t say, in the steadiness that surprises even us.
But it was built long before that moment. Root by root. Circuit by circuit. In soil, and in silence, we cannot see.
Sometimes what feels like standing still is actually growing deeper.
Perhaps this season isn’t about arriving. Perhaps it’s about becoming.
Instead of asking, “Why am I not there yet?” Maybe we should ask, “What is Elohim cultivating in me today?”
Patience. Wisdom. Humility. Compassion. Faithfulness.
These qualities cannot be rushed. They are not manufactured on demand. They are grown — slowly, root by root, in soil we cannot see.
Scripture
“Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” — Jeremiah 17:7–8, KJV
Notice what this tree is not promised. It is not promised cool weather. It is not promised the absence of drought. It is promised something better: roots deep enough to keep bearing fruit even when the heat comes.
That changes everything.
Sunday Reflection
Where has YHWH planted you today?
Instead of wishing yourself into another season, ask Him to show you what He wants to grow in the one you’re standing in right now.
Your roots are becoming stronger than you realize, even when the only evidence lies beneath the surface. And when the season changes, the fruit will come — not forced, not hurried, but in its appointed time.
Prayer
Abba Father,
Teach me to be faithful in the season You have given me. Help me stop measuring my life by how quickly I arrive, and start measuring it by how deeply I trust You. Grow roots of faith in me that remain steady through every storm and every drought. May my character mature while I wait, may my hope stay anchored, and may my eyes remain fixed on You. Let every hidden season prepare me for the work You have already planned.
In Yeshua’s name, Amen.
