Sunday Still: What do you see when you look within?

There are conversations we rarely make time for — the ones we have with ourselves, in the quiet places where no one is watching and nothing needs to be performed. It’s in these moments that you can examine your heart before God.

In a world that rewards speed and certainty, slowing down to ask How am I really doing? can feel almost countercultural. Personal reflection — especially spiritual reflection — invites us to pause and examine the condition of the heart. And yet, when you examine your heart before God, this is exactly the kind of inner attentiveness that God invites us into.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” — Psalm 139:23

Personal reflection is not self-criticism. It is not the voice that lists your shortcomings or rehearses your regrets. It is something gentler and more sacred — an honest look at the interior life, held in the light of God’s truth rather than the weight of condemnation. Moreover, to examine your heart before God is to welcome that gentleness and truth.

When we reflect with that kind of grace, we begin to notice what we’ve quietly been carrying.

YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF NOTICING

A weariness that needs rest

A gratitude you haven’t named

A pattern worth releasing

A growth you haven’t honored

A fear that needs surrendering

A strength you didn’t know you had

All of it is valuable. All of it is welcome here.

Reflection is not about measuring failure.
It is about noticing where God is already at work. It is about asking, with an open and unhurried heart: Am I aligned with what God has called me to? Am I moving in the direction of the woman He is shaping me to become?

This is the work of awareness — not achievement. It is noticing where you are, so that you can be honest about where you may need to go. Also, examining your heart before God can bring clarity to this journey.

Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.”

LAMENTATIONS 3:40

Returning to the Lord begins with seeing clearly. And seeing clearly begins with stillness.

Today, in the quiet, ask yourself gently:

What has this season been teaching me — and am I willing to receive it?

Let the question settle without rushing toward an answer. The stillness itself is part of the work. And in that stillness, you may find that God has already been speaking. In summary, it is vital to examine your heart before God as a practice of spiritual growth.
